LIKE FRESH GRAPES IN A GLASS

From the Vineyard to the Glass:
The Story of a Dream

My name is Valter Barbero and I am the owner of Cascina Pian d’Or, a winery located in the heart of the Langhe, in Mango. Our story is the result of three generations of dedication to viticulture, beginning with my grandfather Giovanni and continued by my father Giuseppe. Both cultivated Moscato grapes with passion and sacrifice, selling them to the major sparkling wine producers of Piedmont. I decided to take a different path: to transform those golden bunches into a wine capable of telling our story.

As a child, I spent my days in close contact with my grandfather and my father, learning the art of viticulture. Every break among the rows of vines was a magical moment: bread, salami, and a glass of Moscato became a ritual, a small fragment of happiness that stayed with me over time. Those experiences taught me that wine is not just a product: it is a bond with the land, with family, with life. In 1989, at the age of 21, I decided to follow my heart and give a face to my family’s work. It was a bold, almost crazy choice, but the desire to create something of my own, something authentic, was stronger than any obstacle. Every bottle I produce today carries that dream, that passion, and the sacrifices of those who never stopped believing.

Making this dream come true required enormous sacrifices: many called me “crazy,” including my own family. But I knew it was the right path, and nothing would stop me. Today, I look with pride at what we have built: a winery that respects nature, technologies that preserve what the land gives us, and a constant commitment to sustainability. I believe that wine should be a bridge between the past and the future, an experience that conveys authenticity and innovation in every sip.

My greatest dream is to make Moscato d’Asti known all over the world, challenging the prejudices that see it as just a “party wine.” For me, Moscato d’Asti is much more: it’s poetry in a bottle, an expression of beauty and authenticity that deserves to be celebrated every day. I want every glass to tell a story: the story of a generous land, of hardworking hands, and of a passion that knows no boundaries.

COMPANY

The Barbero Family

I am no longer alone in this journey. My wife Lina helps me with the business, and for some years now, my children, Lorenzo and Serena, have also chosen to be part of this story. Together, we carry on a tradition that renews itself day by day, with the same enthusiasm and passion that guided my grandfather and my father. Cascina Pian d’Or is not just a company: it is a family working together toward a common goal, where each member contributes with their own dedication and ideas. We believe that the strength of a family-run business is the beating heart of what we do, a value that shines through in every bottle we produce.

THE VINEYARDS

There is a corner of Piedmont where the hills gently unfold under the sun, where the morning mist wraps the vineyards in an embrace, and every row tells stories of passion and dedication. Here in Mango d’Alba, between 300 and 500 meters above sea level, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Langhe region, our 30 hectares of vineyards stretch out. The age of the vines ranges from 15 to 50 years, with a low yield in favor of a higher-quality product. The soils are mainly sandy and calcareous, mixed with tuff. The weather pattern throughout the year creates a typically continental climate, with more rainfall in spring and autumn. Thanks to these unique climate conditions, this area is one of the most renowned for the cultivation of Moscato grapes.

WINERY

Where tradition meets innovation.

Our winery, built in the 1990s, was designed to preserve the unique characteristics of our grapes, transforming each bunch into a wine that tells the story of the land. Divided into four dedicated areas, we use advanced technologies to ensure quality and freshness. Every step—from crushing to pressing, constant temperature control, and microfiltration—is carefully designed to maintain the aromas and sweet flavor of freshly harvested grapes.

After bottling, the wine rests in our temperature-controlled storage until it is ready to be shared and enjoyed.

From the vineyard to the bottle, we follow every step with passion and care, vinifying and bottling directly on the estate to ensure the highest quality. Because every bottle we bring to the world is a piece of our Langhe, an invitation to discover the timeless charm of this land.

WINES

Each of our bottles tells a story of passion, dedication, and love for our land and its unique grapes.

The Moscato d’Asti DOCG par excellence, with persistent froth and a musky aroma. Fresh and sweet, it surprises with its versatility: excellent with desserts, sushi, or spicy foods.

Discover the elegance of Serena, a sweet red wine with a delicate aroma of ripe fruit and dried rose. With its balanced sweetness and a light tannic touch, it’s ideal for desserts, fresh fruit, and aperitifs.

The Piemonte Brachetto DOC with its deep ruby color and lively froth. Delicate and sweet, it pairs perfectly with dry pastries, baked desserts, and fresh berries.

A still version of Moscato, fresh and aromatic, with intense notes of exotic fruit. Perfect as an aperitif or paired with fish dishes, risottos, and foie gras, for unique and refined moments.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Guardians of the land, creators of the future

Our story is rooted in the land, among the rows of vines we have tended for generations with respect and dedication. Every harvest is a dialogue with nature, every bottle contains the fruit of a fragile and precious balance.

For us, sustainability is not a trend, but a duty. It means choosing to cultivate without forcing nature, allowing the soil to breathe, and protecting the biodiversity that lives in our vineyards. It means reducing impact, optimizing every resource, and investing in solutions that preserve our winemaking heritage for those who come after us.

We believe that wine is the liquid memory of the land that creates it. That’s why every choice we make is a bridge between the past and the future: we gather the knowledge of those who came before us and turn it into concrete actions, to leave behind not only healthier vineyards, but also the value of a respectful and mindful agriculture for those who will come after us.

The National Quality System for Integrated Production (SQNPI) is a voluntary certification scheme that certifies our products have been obtained using integrated production techniques.

SOIL MANAGEMENT

From the very beginning, Cascina Pian d’Or has based its wine production on sustainable viticulture, cultivating its vineyards in an ecological and rational way, according to the principles of integrated farming.

  • We strive to create optimal vegetative conditions that are less favorable to the development of diseases: therefore, we do not use chemical fertilizers in the soil, resorting, when necessary, to natural organic material (humus, manure, etc.).
  • We do not use herbicides to control weeds, and mechanical work is aimed at promoting controlled grass cover. In this way, biodiversity is encouraged.
  • As for plant protection, we do not use systemic products (except in cases of exceptional risk), and we pay close attention to innovations in ecological and natural products, aiming to stimulate the plants to increase their self-defense capacity.
  • We aim for a significant reduction in the use of copper and do not use insecticides, except for mandatory treatments required to control certain plant diseases (such as flavescence).

The goal of these choices is “to obtain a healthy and balanced raw material, which will then be reflected in the wine, defining its quality.”

LANDSCAPE PROTECTION

We believe that sustainability is also an expression of beauty. That’s why, in our vineyards, we adopt solutions that reduce the human impact on the landscape. We are gradually replacing concrete with corten steel trellises, a material that blends harmoniously with the environment and preserves the aesthetic of the hills, recognized as a World Heritage Site.

ENERGY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES

In our winery, the south-facing slope of the roof is entirely covered with photovoltaic solar panels, with a total capacity of 100 KWp. This photovoltaic system covers 50% of our electricity needs, also allowing us to sell the surplus.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

We use lightweight glass bottles weighing 485 grams to reduce weight and transportation costs, saving energy and lowering CO2 emissions.
The packaging is made from recyclable materials, designed to create the lowest possible environmental impact.

REDUCTION OF SANITIZERS

Thanks to the use of a high-concentration ozone generator system, we optimize the sanitization of containers, surfaces, and machinery, drastically reducing the use of chemical substances and water consumption. This innovative system ensures effective cleaning without leaving residues, contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly process.

AWARDS

The quality and authenticity of our wines have captured the attention of industry experts and prestigious wine guides. We are proud to have received recognition from renowned critics and specialized magazines, who reward our commitment to producing wines that tell the story of our land and the passion of our family. These achievements motivate us every day to pursue excellence in every bottle.
